SOAR (Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships) is a grassroots task force of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
SOAR is made up of domestic violence survivors who are dedicated to using their voices and experiences to end domestic violence.
SOAR was formed in 1989 by a group of survivors in order to address the root causes of domestic violence, and the systemic and societal issues that affect victims of domestic violence and their children.
SOAR has more than 100 members, all survivors of domestic violence.
Our mission is to promote, advocate, and work towards the elimination of domestic violence and to embody and give visibility to the voices of abused women.
Key to our work is developing and fostering healthy working relationships within the group. SOAR members do personal, challenging work, so we create a community that nurtures and supports each other.
SOAR members serve as ambassadors in the larger community, bringing awareness to domestic violence. To do so effectively, SOAR offers regular trainings to members and connects members to community training opportunities.
SOAR is an opportunity to own the title “survivor” and work for good in our community. SOAR is unique in Rhode Island in providing this form of community and solidarity for survivors many years removed from the experience of domestic violence.
Together we can create greater change than on our own.
SOAR is a place where survivors lead and make decisions. The ultimate goal is for SOAR members to thrive individually and collectively, achieving personal and community goals that will lead to a brighter future for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
